    你是有科学头脑的，知道虽然根据双方的实力、状态等因素可以猜测比赛结果，但是想要场场猜对达到100％的准确率是不可能的，就连球王贝利也经常猜错嘛。所以你对这封垃圾来信一删了之。第一场比赛的结果果然是德国队胜，但是你知道这很可能是巧合，随便乱猜也有三分之一猜对的可能。
    然后你收到了第二封信，预测接下来的阿根廷队对墨西哥队的比赛将是阿根廷队胜。又说对了。这时你开始对此人的预测结果感兴趣。接下来的第三场、第四场……全部8场的结果果然全部说对。你是有科学头脑的，你很快算出，如果是随机乱猜，全部说对的概率只有1/6561。你确信此人的确发明了能准确预测比赛结果的方法。
    此人又寄来一封信，要求你向他的网上支付账号转入1千元，才能告诉你1/4决赛第一场比赛德国队对阿根廷队的预测结果。你毫不犹豫地把钱交了，很快得到预测结果说阿根廷队胜。你立即拿出1万元钱到博彩公司给阿根廷队下注，坐等赢回2万元钱。然而比赛结果却是德国队点球胜了，而你再也没有收到“世界杯预测者”的来信。

   这是怎么回事，100％准确的预测方法怎么突然失灵了？这是一个简单的骗局。“世界杯预测者”买了一份含1000万个电子邮件的名单，给其中的三分之一发函预测德国队胜，三分之一预测瑞典队胜，最后三分之一预测比赛平局。根据比赛结果，再给预测德国队胜的那三分之一再分成三份，分别预测阿根廷队和墨西哥队胜，以及平局。依此类推，最终总会有1520人获得场场准确的预测结果，你很幸运地属于其中之一。只不过你的运气用完了，在接下来的分组中你被分到了预测失败的那组。
    这虽然是个假想的情形，但是类似的预测假象和骗局在现实中并不罕见。现在最时髦的是地震预测。虽然国家立法禁止个人发布短期、临震预报，但是却有不少人在网上这么干。比如有一名京剧团下岗职工号称发明了能捕捉“中微子”预测地震的仪器，几乎天天在网上以气象预报的形式做掩饰，发布中国某地即将地震的预报，并向网友索要捐款赞助。相信他的网友还很不少，据称一个月内就收到了一万多元的捐款。有一位自称有科学头脑的在校大学生给我留言说，据其核实，此人的确有办法预测地震，曾经说某地区要发生4级左右的地震，后来那个地区的某县果然发生了4.4级地震……
    这也是一个简单的预测骗局，能够蒙人的原因在于一般人没有意识到，没有破坏性的地震是极其频繁地发生的。世界范围内一年平均大约要发生13万次3～3.9级地震，13000次4～4.9级地震。这些地震又集中发生在地震带。所以要猜中某个位于地震带的地区在一个时间段内发生一次4级左右的地震，并不难。何况天天发地震预报，不碰巧有几次说得比较准反而不正常了。即使是一个不走的时钟，一天也会报准两次时间。人们会倾向于记住碰巧说准的那几次，而忘了没有说准的无数次，否则所有的算命先生都该下岗了。
    因为此人似乎能够说准几次小地震，有人（甚至包括某些地震局“专家”）就以为他也能说准大地震，却没有意识到这二者存在着巨大的区别。要猜小震不难，猜大震则极难，因为震级越高，发生的频率就越低，碰巧发生在有人居住的地方的大地震就更罕见。而人们关心的，正是这种具有破坏性的大地震能否被预测。但是因为它非常罕见，所以迄今还没有人蒙对过。如果不是靠蒙的，而是靠发现什么前兆信号，那么大地震的前兆信号按理应该更强、更易检测到，也就应该比小地震更容易预测。而事实恰好相反，大地震的发生从来就没有人准确地预测过，正说明地震预测都是靠蒙。
    如果把时间、地点的范围扩大，大地震也能被蒙上。青海玉树地震发生后，兰州地震研究所一名研究员即声称他在2006年发表的一篇论文已预测到了这次地震。实际上那篇论文预测的是“2012年在东昆仑断裂带有可能再次发生7级地震”，时间不准，范围也太大。中国搞地震预测的人非常多，每个断裂带在某个年份可能发生的大地震几乎都有人预测，那么每次大地震发生之后再回头去找，总能找到某篇论文在一定程度上说中了。这种一锤子买卖并不能说明那篇论文的作者真的发现了可靠的预测方法。他们的预测方法都是闭门造车（靠玩数字游戏或自制仪器），适用于世界上发生的任何大地震。如果他们对各个大地震（每年世界范围内大约要发生18次7级以上地震）都能预测到，才会让人相信那不是蒙的。
    这种预测假象本不难识破，但是面临随时可能发生的灾难，人们总爱幻想能有高人指点迷津，心甘情愿地受蒙蔽，因此骗局得以流行。
